Description:

This is a model of the Hollerith Census Machine of 1890. The Census Machine read special punch cards, which contained information whose encoding was based on the position of holes in the card. Since the 1880 census was still being tabulated in the late 1880s, the Census Machine was a response to the urgent need for automation. The unit on the left is the accumulator; the unit on the right is a card sorter.
