jan 1, 1805 - Jacquard Loom

Description:

Joseph-Maire Jacquard was a weaver in the French town of Lyons who, in 1805 patented a weaving machine controlled by a series of punched cards. The pattern of holes in the card controlled the warp and weft of fabric (typically silk) on the loom. His simple and elegant system of cards was widely copied and adapted to a variety of uses such as controlling player pianos and, eventually, the storing of information for computers. The Jacquard loom is the ancestor of today's computer controlled machine tools and other automated production equipment.
