jan 9, 1001 - Leif Erikson Discovers "Vinland"

Description:

In 1000, Erik the Red's son, Leif Erikson, sailed to Norway where he was converted to Christianity by King Olaf. On his way back home in 1001, he mistakenly over-shot Greenland and landed in the New World (North America) where he created a settlement called Vinland (Newfoundland). The settlement survived less than a decade due to opposition of the Native Americans.
