jul 19, 1870 - Enlistment attempt
Description:
Jacob Riis learned that France declared war on Germany. He was expecting that Denmark would join France in order to avenge the Prussian seizure of Schelswig. He quickly returned to New York and pawned off most of his items in attempt to volunteer for the French army in their consulate, but was rejected because they were not interested in someone from America. After a short period of working on a farm and other small jobs, in Mount Vernon, New York, he returned to New York City because he heard a rumor spreading that enlistment was happening.
