Before Jacob had arrived in America, his father wanted him to work in literature, but he worked as a carpenter. After the first five days of being in America, he managed to find a job as a carpenter at Brady's Bend Iron Works, on the Allegheny River, located above Pittsburgh. After a few days, he also started mining to get extra money, but quickly returned to only carpentry.
