The historical Burmese Shan States covered modern-day northern States of Myanmar, Kayah State as well as Laos, Thailand and the southwestern part of Yunnan, China. The first major Shan State of the Pagan Dynasty was founded in Mogaung. The Shan States ruled in Monarchy, and they believed in Theravada Buddhism and animism. The capital was Mogaung.
