aug 1, 1215 - King John I of England signs the Magna Carta

Description:

"The Great Charter" of 1215
Goals:
1. Limit the "money-getting" activities of King John I
2. To ground royal justice and make it more equitable and accessible.
3. To assert the King could not act against individuals in an arbitrary fashion

KEY: Emerging idea of rule of law, the King was subject to the law just like everyone esle

Notable Clauses:
39 and 40. The king promised not to act against free men(nobles) except by judgement of their peers and can't deny, sell, or delay justice.
Security Clause (KEY). John was forced to authorize a committee of 25 Barons to enforce the charter's terms, even against himself

he first Magna Carta failed because John asked his lord Innocent III to review it and he veto'ed the Charter because he did not like the power of the security clause.

King John dies mysteriously in 1216 and his son King Henry III makes peace with the Barons and signs a new Magna Carta without the security clause in 1216.

HUGE impact on our Bill of Rights and British Common Law. Also the Constitution.
