jan 1, 1564 - Galileo Galilei

Description:

(1564-1642)
Galileo was an artist, which impacted the way he viewed science. Though others before him had used a telescope, his artistic knowledge of perspective and shadow allowed him to notice mountains, craters, and other abnormalities on the moon’s surface, continuing the ideas of the connection of art and science from the Renaissance. Galileo published three main books: The Assayer, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, and Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Concerning Two New Sciences Pertaining to Mechanics and Local Motion. Galileo states that nature is structured and mathematical, but he also emphasizes that religion and nature/science are connected. He said density, rather than weight, determined the velocity of a falling body and heaviness was a relative property. Galileo stated that if a body was traveling through a medium with negligible resistance, it would have constant acceleration. He also stated that projectiles moved in a parabola, with two independent motions: forward motion and accelerated motion towards the ground. The most significant contribution of Galileo was directly confronting Aristotelian physics. He used logic and evidence to prove the errors in it. He challenged the foundation for not only physics but also astronomy and other fields.
