jan 31, 2006 - Iraqi elections

Description:

For the first time in decades, Iraqi citizens gathered to vote on January 1, 2005. Iraq was previously ruled under a constitutional monarchy, which after 10 general elections was overthrown in 1958. From 1958 to 2003 Iraq was lead by a series of military governments, the last of which was Saddam Hussein. With the newly drafted constitution and the ability to vote, Iraqi citizens felt that they actually had a voice in decades. (BBC)
