A CIA-sponsored coup deposed Mossaddegh and brought the Pahlavi Shah to power. This furthered the anti-Western sentiments, leading up to the 1989 revolution.He began the White Revolution, which attempted to modernize the country by increasing the use of Savak, alienating Shia clerics, and expanding Women's rights.
