jan 1, 1989 - Constitutional Reform
Description:
In the 1989 Constitutional Reforms, power shifted away from the clerics. The Supreme Leader no longer needed to be a marja (Grand Ayatollah), and the reforms also removed the requirement that he be chosen by popular acclaim. Additionally, the size of the Assembly of Religious Experts increased and the post of prime minister was eliminated.
