apr 29, 1992 - 1992 Los Angeles Riots

Description:

The 1992 Los Angeles Riots were a direct response to the acquittal of four officers who were caught on tape brutally beating Rodney King, an unarmed black man. Just hours after the verdict, enraged objectors took to the streets, setting fires, damaging property, and assaulting, sometimes killing others for the next six days. The pandemonium later traveled to Korea Town, where nearly 2000 Korean owned businesses were vandalized or destroyed, totaling in 400million in losses. That April, an LA Korean store owner murdered 15-year-old Latasha Harlins, an African American girl, over orange juice which he accused her of stealing despite the money found on her person after the fact. The store owner walked away with probation and a $500 fine and the incident heightened tensions between LAs African American and Korean communities.

Smaller riots also broke out across North America in San Francisco, Las Vegas in Nevada, Seattle in Washington state, Atlanta in Georgia, New York City and on Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

King disapproved of the riots and televised a plea famously asking "can we all get along?"
