On March 12, 1947, President Truman announced the Truman Doctrine, an American foreign policy aimed at countering the expansion of the Soviet expansion. In order to do so, a $400 million economic and military aid package is sent to Greece and Turkey in order to combat communism. This opposition to communism increased tensions.
