Description:

Sputnik was the first artificial satellite launched into space by the Soviet Union. This showed that the space race that had started 2 years earlier was being won by the Soviets. The United States began taking the space race more seriously after the launch of Sputnik. This is important because it caused NASA to be created. NASA has pushed the boundary of what is possible ever since.
