jun 25, 1950 - Start of the Korean War

Description:

The Korean war was a war between north and south Korea. The north was a proxy force of the Soviet Union, and the South was pro western culture. So the United States began supporting the South. The Korean war is a marker of the proxy wars that were waged during the cold war in that major powers couldn't directly engage one another because of the Weapons of mass destruction they possessed, so countries would back other smaller countries in conflict to spread their ideologies. The United States wanted to protect and spread democracy, while the Soviets wished to spread communism. These proxy wars are still going on today. The current Syrian civil war is a Russo-American proxy war, with the United States supporting the rebels while Russia supports the Assad regime. The Korean war differs from other such wars because the United States got directly involved and had troops on the ground in Korea. America still has a military presence in Korea as a result of the Korean war.
