oct 16, 1859 - John Brown

Description:

John Brown was a radical abolitionist. His efforts to end slavery ended up ending many lives. In 1851, he helped create the League of Gileadites, which protected runaway slaves from slave catchers. On October 16, 1859, he led a raid on the federal arsenal in Harper's Ferry, VA, hoping to arm slaves. He had 21 others following him into battle, but most were captured or killed, and he was hung for treason.
