The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 different stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer in middle english. Geoffrey Chaucers last name is an example of french influencing the english language. The Canterbury Tales are based on society from different point of views but includes satire and humor. For example 'The Wife of Bath's Tale' is about womens role in society but Chaucer has managed to fit some irony and whit into the tale.

It is around this time english becomes the national language of England. A standardized version of english was put in place because of the invention of the printing press by Johann Gutenberg.
