sep 1, 1555 - Peace of Augsburg
Description:
The Peace of Augsburg was signed by Charles V in 1555. This treaty gave German princes the right to decide whether their berg would be Catholic or Protestant. This was one of the first major acts of religious tolerance. The treaty appeased the German princes because it gave them more freedom, and it frustrated Charles V because he was forced to sign it to stop the religious wars between the German princes and him. However, the treaty helped conflicts between the Protestant German princes and Charles V cease, so it was highly successful.
