dec 1, 1969 - T.I.E in the U.K Belgrade Theatre

Description:

Six years after its construction, the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry was established as the first theatre facilitating childrens education in Britain (Jordan and Weitz, 151; Wooster, 15). The TIE company introduced children to the concept of learning through theatre during district school visits and workshops . Traditional methods of teaching such as rote learning were questioned when teachers participated in teacher/actor roles of TIE that were successful (Wooster, 14). Belgrades success lead to a course of drama being set up to equip teachers with the drive to continue incorporating drama in education into the curriulum /school day.
TIE is an egalitarian, heuristic approach to education which aims to facilitate child-centred learning through play. The educational practice encourages children to become critical thinkers; deemed a vital skill demanded in the ever-changing modern world (Wooster, 19). This new development was influenced by past philosophical and educational approaches to children's development and theatre. Such ideas consist of Vygotsky's scaffolding theory and philosophical pedagogues of Montessori and Pestalozzi (Wooster, 15).
