oct 1, 1919 - Street Theatre

Description:

Street Theatre is an asset of ancient times, dating back to performances in the streets ancient Egypt and Rome. Performances were held at markets and fairs, in churches and in the courts of Kings: the shows were the main of entertainment. After the evolvement of staged indoor theatre, street theatre still remained to entertain those who could not afford the luxury of indoor theatre (Piccolo Nuovo Teatro). Throughout the middle ages religious plays were commonly performed outside of churches. These productions began in the twelfth century. Productions became adorned and intense, often lasting several days, between 1200 and 1350. During these years, vernacular drama replaced liturgical drama. The theatre became an aspect of the church and its state and citizens. Vernacular plays were staged adjacent to the Church. In 1300 the churches role in society was being challenged through the establishment of new institution and authorities, such as Universities. Secular concerns came to existence, during this time of transition (Brockett and Hildy, 81).
