A surge of woman candidates ran for office and won. Four women were elected as senators and 24 women as representatives to congress. These candiatates include: the first Muslim women to be elected into congress, Democrats Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, Republican Marsha Blackburn, the first female senator of Tennessee, the first Native American women, democrats Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids, and republican Kristi Noem, the first female governor of South Dakota. This parallels with the "Year of the Woman" in 1992.
