Description:
In 1501, Amerigo Vespucci set off on a voyage for the country Portugal. In 1502, as he traveled down what is now the South American coastline to the south, he realized that the land that Columbus had previously thought was Asia was not Asia. He claimed it was part of a "New World," and now South America is named after him.
