dec 15, 1488 - Bartolomeu Dias returns to Portugal

Description:

Bartolomeu Dias, sailing for Portugal, reached the Cape of Good Hope, being the first to do so. He returned to Portugal with this information on December 15, 1488, and was hailed by the Portuguese for his achievement. This was incredibly important to the search for the prized, extremely valuable and longed for spices, as finding the cape led to finding a water route to India, and thus finding a way to obtain said spices.
