Description:

Alex Wilson, John's brother, goes into debt allowing the family business to fail. Alex tried to save the business by asking for money from his sister and the bank. Then he forges a signature of an old friend and steals five hundred pounds. Jack also contributes to his brother's mess by taking money from his own business and stealing money from his brother-in-law. Scandal was announced once the people found out the measures the brother's had taken. "The Wilson's good reputation lay in ruins, and Jack felt humiliated and disgraced. He never forgave Alex". Jack decides to flee to Canada to escape the scandal.

This is significant to the novel because it is the whole reason why John travels to Canada. This is the point where he leaves his family, this shows a lot about his character.
