After Jack lied to Jessie about his wife, he took his lies to another level. He encouraged Jessie to write to his family, and in return Jack wrote fake letters back to Jessie. He wrote: "He has had a hard life, Jessie, but you are his first love and I know he will make you happy..." Jessie never got suspicious about the letters.
As John was welcomed by the Pattersons', he become welcomed in the community. As he become a healthier day by day he was offered a job of notary public and justice of peace. He thought that his life was getting better, and it would take time to get back into the Mounties.

This is significant because this shows the measures John went to to make Jessie really believe in his lies. He had totally cut out Polly from his life and found a knew lover.
