The doctor gives John Wilson the news that he has tuberculosis. John knew how unlikely it was to survive this illness, only ten per cent. He was told that "with care - good food, complete bed rest - you might get better."
Jack was released from the RNWMP and was asked to hand in his uniform. He was told to quarantine himself in a tent.
As the cold Winter came along it was impossible for John to survive in his circumstances. So Jessie looks after him, and at some point John lies and tells her that his wife is crazy and they are getting a divorce.
John eventually asks Jessie to marry him.. and she says yes.

At this point in the book John starts to lie about his life. This is important cause it is the start of two seperate lives that could entangle and ruin his life.
