jan 4, 1649 - The Act Concerning Religion - 1649

Description:

In 1649, Leonard (he was Cecil’s brother who was George Calvert’s son) passed the first American law giving others religious freedom. The law was called “the Act Concerning Religion.” Although, the law would only apply to Christians, everyone else had to live without religious freedom in Maryland.

The Act Concerning Religion was important because it shows how people would create these laws claiming to be “religious freedom” but it was only religious freedom for themselves, and no one else. That’s why people were leaving their own homes to start new colonies in America. People wanted to get their own religious freedom because everyone else’s beliefs were different than their own. This shows that people didn’t believe in change.
