The declaration of independence was not only a shining example of the lengths that enlightenment ideals had traveled, but also a major political event that would have major reporcutsion in Britain's future. Many of the writings of John Locke and voltaire are referenced and major points in the declaration of independence, arguing for the protection of human rights and fighting against tyranny. The loss of the american colonies for britain would be a major blow, and the newly formed nation would have impacts on upcoming wars and events, overall weakening the British empire. These were major changes to the political landscape of europe and the world as a whole.
