Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson married William Gaskell, a Unitarian minister, in 1832. They had five children, two of whom died in infancy. William suggested that Elizabeth should write, so you might say he was the man behind the authoress. Gaskell died in 1865 at age 55.

North and South was her third novel.
