Jean-Baptiste de la Salle founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1684. Brothers of the Christian Schools was the first Catholic Congregation of male nonclerics devoted to schools and learning. It helped give education to boys from poor families. This was a change in society during this time as this was the first institute of its kind supported by the Catholic Church.
