jan 1, 1771 - St. Ann's, Gardiner

Description:

In 1771, Dr. Sylvester Gardiner, a prominent Boston druggist and physician and one of the original Kennebec Proprietors, gave a sum of money to build a church in Gardinerston. A small wooden church was erected and named St. Ann’s in honor of Dr. Gardiner’s daughter. The Rev Jacob Bailey, the Frontier Minister and rector of the church in Pownalboro (now Dresden), preached the first sermon. In 1793 the church was set on fire by Henry McCausland, a person suffering from the delusion that God had instructed him to it. The Church was rebuilt in 1794 and the congregation grew and grew until it was decided in 1817 that a new and larger Church was needed. On October 19, 1820 today’s Christ Church was consecrated.
