mar 15, 44 BC - ~ caesar's death ~
Description:
- The only way that caesar can stay in power in rome and not get prosecuted is to head out to war and fight. If he leaves for war, his supporters basically have to do all of the work in rome
• He was going to had out to Persia, bc the parthians there have always given Rome a hard time
• He planned to be away for 3 years
- His departure date was March 18 44 BCE
- He was assassinated on March 15 44 BCE
- Cleo was a spectator bc she couldn’t really do anything about anything in Rome
- Important figures:
• Gaius Cassius (85-42BCE)
• M. Junius Brutus (85-42BCE)
○ They were invited to head the conspiracy at a later date
○ Important men for the assassins to get on board
○ His ancestor was Lucius Junius Brutus
§ He overthrew the romans last king and brought in the oligarchy
§ He stood up to tyrans; was a rebel
§ Perfect rallying pint
○ Who were their followers?
§ Men who though that they could do better than following powerful people to move ahead
- Caesar was killed in the Theatre of Pompey
• He was stabbed under the Pompey's statue feet
• Each of the conspirators struck Caesar once (so they all had a hand in his death)
• He was stabbed 23 times
• As he fell, he made sure to pull his toga down, even in death, he wanted to be dignified
- Afterwards
• The Senate goes into a panic
• They don't want to allow the assassination, but they don't also want to exile the killers bc then they'll make more enemies
• So civil unrest breaks out
○ Bc the large populus loved caesar, so they ended up chasing the killers out of Rom
• Brutus and Cassius fled from rome
- Because of Caesars behaviour mimicking one as KING, he failed to bridge the gap in the last years of his life, many missteps
