Description:

South African Christian Barnard performs the first ever heart transplant. The procedure becomes so successful and widespread during the 1970s that there is a shortage of donor hearts. South African cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard performs the first successful human-to-human heart transplant. Argentine cardiac surgeon René Favaloro performs the first documented saphenous aortocoronary bypass. Physical inactivity and obesity are found to increase the risk of heart disease.
