jan 1, 1876 - Telephone

Description:

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and made his first call on March 10, 1876. The purpose of the telephone was to enable real-time communication between two people or parties too far from each other to be directly heard. The telephone was ground-breaking technology in increasing and enabling interconnectedness. It saved much more time than the traditional Pony Express communication between two parties, where a single message could take days to reach the other person. It also enabled for America to expand geographically to the place we know it as today. This interconnectedness also fostered the spread of ideas and this mechanism of long distance communication greatly spurred the growth of computing innovations in the next century.
