may 22, 1856 - Charles Sumner Attacked on the Senate Floor
Description:
Charles Sumner was attacked on the Senate floor after delivering an anti-slavery speech by Preston Brooks. This was because in his speech he verbally attacked Brook's second cousin which resulted in him being beaten with a cane almost to the point of death. The result would be his adoration in the south and hatred in the north which was yet another push escalating the conflicts that resulted in the Civil War.
