Description:

The Compromise of 1850 admitted California into the union but did not regulate slavery in the western territories. This also came with a strengthening in the Fugitive Slave Act now requiring people of the North to return escaped slaves to the south. This act increased the divide between the sections of the country by forcing non-slaveholders to help capture escaped slaves. The divide would set the stage for future conflicts and served as kindling for the Civil War
