In 1698, Thomas Savery, an engineer and inventor, invented what would soon become the first steam engine. He had the fundamental idea and Thomas Necomen fixed its problems and remodeled it in 1711. The purpose of a steam engine is to provide mechanical power by using the energy of steam. It has impacted society by allowing for the onset of the Industrial Revolution, during which this technology allowed for cheaper access to power, so now more people could have power and harness it to create more innovations. The Industrial Revolution also greatly increased time and efficiency for many manual tasks, helping society greatly.
