American presidential election held on Nov. 6, 1860, in which the Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln defeated the Southern Democrat candidate John C. Breckinridge, Democratic candidate Stephen A. Douglas, and Constitutional Union candidate John Bell. This was significant to sectionalism because the top half of the country voted one way and the bottom half of the country voted the opposite way, showing sectionalism.
