22h 13min, mar 6, 1857 y - Dred Scott vs. Sanford

Description:

The Supreme Court ruled that Americans of African descent, whether free or slave, were not American citizens and could not sue in federal court, that Congress lacked power to ban slavery, and the Court declared that the rights of slaveowners were constitutionally protected by the Fifth Amendment because slaves were property. This was significant to sectionalism because it still shows that there is a major problem with slavery, and that the two sides were very tense towards each other, hence the court decision.
