3h 56min, may 22, 1856 y - Bleeding Sumner
Description:
The battle over Kansas led to Sumner denouncing the “Crime against Kansas”. He then began denouncing a number of Southern Senators, including Senator Andrew Butler. Two days after this, Butler’s nephew came and hit Sumner on the head with a club, shattering it to pieces and left Sumner bleeding in the Senate chamber. This was significant to sectionalism because it shows how people were so divided over slavery.
