12h 1min, may 30, 1854 y - Kansas-Nebraska Act
Description:
In order to build the Transcontinental Railroad, congressmen wanted to add the Nebraska Territory to the United States, but they needed to decide whether the territory would be a slave state or not. The territory was divided into the states of Kansas and Nebraska, so the states could decide their laws through voting. This furthered sectionalism by leading to pro-slavery forces fighting against anti-slavery forces.
