14h 7min, jan 29, 1850 y - Compromise of 1850

Description:

A compromise between the North and South where the North got California admitted as a free state, Texas to give up its claims to lands disputed with New Mexico, and the slave trade in D.C. to end. The South got popular sovereignty in Mexican Cession and a new, tougher Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 was passed. This was important because it further divided the states and advancing sectionalism by making people feel more allegiance to the North and South than the country as a whole.
