jan 1, 1850 - Fugative Slave Act

Description:

The Fugitive Slave Act created strife in the North. Under this act northerners had to help capture fugitive slaves. Slaves were not given a trial or jury. This angered northerners and was in conflict with their morals. They helped the slaves. Ignoring fines and imprisonment, they broke into court and freed a fugitive, and they killed two slave catchers. This act under the Compromise of 1850 heaped more anger onto northerners, and southerners were angered because the North was diliberatly disobeying the act.
