apr 21, 1971 - Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education

Description:

This case was brought to the Supreme Court because much of the South had seen little to no progress in the speed of desegregation. This case occurred in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina, where nearly 14,000 black students attended schools that were 99% or 100% black. This case was brought to the Supreme Court because the petitioner believed that the federal courts were authorized to oversee state-imposed segregation. After the unanimous decision in favor of Swann in the Supreme Court, the Court ordered busing to integrate schools, a pattern that continued even into the 1990s.
