In January 1905, 200,000 peaceful protesters marched towards the Winter Palace, led by Father Gapon. They wanted to hand in a petition asking for changes. The troops panicked and fired upon the crowd and at least a hundred were killed and several hundred more were injured, leading to strikes within the city.
