mar 1, 1813 - Slaves Joining British Forces

Description:

Description: In 1913, British warships landed in the Chesapeake Bay, and along the shores of Maryland and Virginia. Many slaves began fleeing to these ships. The British navy began to promise freedom to slaves who fought for the British.

Description: This occurrence represented one aspect of the sharp social divide between white males and everyone else. Slavery was a social structure through which enslaved blacks had no rights or individual freedoms. The ideals and prinicples of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence did not apply to them. As a result, fighting for the British was a very promising and rewarding option for slaves
