jan 1, 1807 - Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
Description:
The Chesapeake–Leopard affair was a naval engagement that occurred off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia, on June 22, 1807, between the British warship HMS Leopard and the American frigate USS Chesapeake. The crew of Leopard pursued, attacked, and boarded the American frigate, looking for deserters from the Royal Navy. Three Americans were killed and four were impressed into the Royal British Navy. Anti-British feeling ran high, and many Americans demanded war. However, Jefferson resorted to diplomacy and economic pressure. This highlights the American efforts to maintain diplomancy with the other nations of the world rather than immediately resort to war.
