Description:

Since the US was a young country, with young industries, the government instituted tariffs to help protect these industries. During the war of 1812, England cut off trade with the US, so the US needed to make sure that all of the industries stayed in tact. This tariff helped US industries recover and become more self sufficient and rely less on exchange with other countries.
