jan 1, 1820 - Missouri compromise
Description:
In this act, Congress established Missouri as a full state that allowed slavery. To balance this out, they separated Maine from Massachusetts and made it a free state, where slavery was not practiced. They also stated that the rest of the land from the Louisiana purchase would be free of slavery. This was done to appease both the slave loving South and the abolitionists in the North.
The effect that this had on American culture was very significant, as it led to further divide between the north and the south and emphasized that slavery was an issue that had to be dealt with. By specifically assigning a state to the South and one to the North, Congress unknowingly further divided the nation into what was eventually the Union and the Confederacy.
