jun 20, 1802 - Louisiana Purchase

Description:

Description: The French army had become greatly weakened by disease and a salve revolt in Haiti. Rather than try and defend their territory in North America, the French made the shocking offer to sell all their territory from the Mississippi River west to the Rocky Mountains, and from the Canadian Border to the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S quickly jumped on this offer, and payed $15 million for the Louisiana Territory.
Significance: This event nearly doubled the size of the United States. It also foreshadowed a shift in the social and political climate of the country. Federalists feared that they would lose a lot of power, because most of the new states that would be created out of the new territory were likely to be Republican. This event helped foreshadow the decline and eventual end of the political and social influence that the federalist party had.
